A solution for chronic pain

Shock Wave therapy uses technology derived from the treatment of kidney stones (lithotripsy) to treat chronic tendon, ligament and muscular conditions.
It provides an effective, non-invasive and safe means of treating many longstanding and debilitating conditions such as tennis elbow, shoulder tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.
A hand piece, powered by compressed air, delivers rapid pulses of energy in the form of radial pressure waves (shock waves) to the injured tissue.
This reactivates the normal healing process and encourages the tissue to fully recover.
Pain reduction; The patient experiences a reduction of pain. Intensive pulses from the transmitter into the tissues create strong nociceptor activation which inhibit pain signal transmission.
Increased metabolism; Shock waves influence the tissues on a cellular level. The chemical environment of the cells is affected promoting the release of pain and inflammatory inhibiting substances.
Revascularisation; Repeated shock waves to the affected area create a revascularisation effect with new blood flow in the area promoting tissue healing and regeneration.
Reduced muscle tone; The 'vicious circle', as well as the strong pathological association between pain and excessive muscle tone, will be broken and lead to a restoration of normal muscle tone.
SWT has relatively few contraindications.
They are:
  • Not to be used during pregnancy
  • Not to be used within 6 weeks over the site of a cortisone injection
  • Coagulation disorders or anticoagulant therapy (Warfarin)
  • Other contraindications exist. However, they depend upon the site of treatment and the individual circumstances of the patient. All relavant contraindications will be discussed prior to treatment
  • SWT is a physical treatment and as such may incur some mild, transient side effects such as; reddening of the skin, local swelling, localised discomfort or petechiae (red spots).
